What Does the Research Actually Say About TeaCrine®?
A review of the published human trials behind theacrine, the compound marketed as TeaCrine®, and how its research compares to what's known about caffeine and paraxanthine.
Most "clean energy" claims in the nicotine-free pouch category rely on marketing language rather than published research. TeaCrine® is one of the few ingredients in this category with an actual body of human clinical trials behind it, so it's worth reviewing what those trials actually found, not just what the label says.
WHAT IS TEACRINE.
TeaCrine is a branded, nature-identical form of theacrine, a compound that occurs naturally in the leaves of Camellia assamica var. kucha, a type of tea plant. It is not caffeine and is not a caffeine substitute in the traditional sense. It's studied as its own compound with its own mechanism of action.
Trial 1: Energy, Focus, and Jitteriness
A randomized, double-blinded, crossover pilot trial examined the acute effects of TeaCrine supplementation on subjective measures of energy, focus, mood, and physical sensation in healthy adults.1 Compared with placebo, participants who took TeaCrine reported significant increases in energy, concentration, and motivation to exercise, along with lower anxiety. Unlike what's typically reported with caffeine at comparable doses, participants did not report significant jitteriness.

Trial 2: What Happens Over Time
One of the more common issues with stimulants like caffeine is tolerance, meaning the body adapts and you need a higher dose over time to get the same effect. This is sometimes called tachyphylaxis.
A separate trial looked specifically at whether that happens with TeaCrine. Sixty healthy adults were split into a placebo group and two dose groups, 200 milligrams and 300 milligrams daily, and took their assigned dose once a day for eight weeks.2 The researchers found no evidence of tachyphylaxis, meaning TeaCrine's effects did not appear to diminish with repeated daily use over the study period, and no significant negative effects on heart rate, blood pressure, or standard blood chemistry markers.

How TeaCrine Actually Relates to Caffeine
TeaCrine is frequently discussed alongside caffeine, and for a specific reason: the two ingredients appear to work together rather than against each other.
TeaCrine is metabolized more slowly than caffeine and stays present in the body longer.3 It's worth being clear about what that actually means day to day, because "longer lasting" can sound like it means "wired longer," and that's not the case here. TeaCrine works through a calmer, steadier mechanism than caffeine's sharper adenosine-blocking spike, so a longer presence in the body translates to smoother, more even energy rather than an extended stimulant effect. Q: Is paraxanthine basically the same thing as TeaCrine?
A: No. TeaCrine, or theacrine, is a distinct compound with its own independent trial history, including the two studies reviewed above. Paraxanthine is mechanistically part of the same pathway caffeine already uses. TeaCrine is not.
