What Does the Research Actually Say About TeaCrine®?

We looked at the actual human studies behind theacrine, the compound sold as TeaCrine®, and compared them to what we know about caffeine and paraxanthine.

A lot of "clean energy" claims in nicotine-free pouches are just marketing talk. They don't come from real studies. TeaCrine® is different. It actually has human studies behind it. So let's look at what those studies really found, not just what the label says.

WHAT IS TEACRINE.

TeaCrine is the brand name for theacrine, a compound found naturally in the leaves of a tea plant called Camellia assamica var. kucha. It is not caffeine, and it doesn't work like a typical caffeine substitute. It's been studied on its own, as its own compound.

Trial 1: Energy, Focus, and Jitteriness

One study tested how TeaCrine affects energy, focus, mood, and how people physically feel after taking it.1 Some people in the study got TeaCrine, and some got a placebo, a pill with nothing active in it, and neither group knew which one they got. The people who took TeaCrine felt more energy, more focus, and more motivation to exercise. They also felt less anxious. And unlike what people usually report after taking a similar amount of caffeine, they didn't feel jittery.

STUDY CARD 01.

Design:
Randomized, double blinded, crossover pilot trial.
Population:
Healthy adults.
Intervention:
Single dose TeaCrine versus placebo.
Result:
Significant increases in self reported energy, focus, and motivation to exercise, with lower anxiety and no significant jitteriness.

Trial 2: What Happens Over Time

A common problem with stimulants like caffeine is tolerance. That's when your body gets used to something, so you need more of it over time to feel the same effect. Doctors sometimes call this tachyphylaxis.

Another study checked whether that happens with TeaCrine. Sixty healthy adults were split into three groups. One group got a placebo, one got 200 milligrams of TeaCrine a day, and one got 300 milligrams a day. Everyone took their dose once a day for eight weeks.2 The researchers found no signs of tolerance building up, TeaCrine kept working the same way the whole eight weeks. They also found no bad effects on heart rate, blood pressure, or standard blood test results.

STUDY CARD 02.

Design:
Randomized, controlled, 8 week continuous use trial.
Population:
60 healthy adults.
Intervention:
200mg or 300mg TeaCrine daily versus placebo.
Result:
No evidence of tolerance buildup (tachyphylaxis) over 8 weeks; no significant adverse effects on heart rate, blood pressure, or blood chemistry.

How TeaCrine Actually Relates to Caffeine

People often talk about TeaCrine and caffeine together, for good reason. The two seem to work well together instead of against each other.

Your body breaks down TeaCrine more slowly than caffeine, so it stays in your system longer.3 That doesn't mean it keeps you wired longer, though, and that's an important distinction. TeaCrine works in a calmer, steadier way than caffeine. Caffeine gives you a sharp spike. TeaCrine gives you a smoother, more even feeling instead. Studies on taking both together found something useful: caffeine actually helps your body use more of the TeaCrine you take, compared with taking TeaCrine alone.3 That's the research behind why TeaCrine is made to work alongside your regular coffee or energy drink, not replace it.

STEADY, NOT WIRED.

Caffeine:

Sharp Peak, Then a Crash.

TeaCrine:

Smooth and Sustained.

TeaCrine's calmer mechanism is why it's made to work alongside your existing caffeine, not compete with it, without keeping you wired longer.

Where Paraxanthine Fits Into This Picture

Paraxanthine is the ingredient used in some other nicotine-free pouches, like Ultra. It's not the same thing as TeaCrine. But it's worth knowing the difference, since both get marketed with similar "clean energy" language.

Paraxanthine is what caffeine turns into after your liver breaks it down.4 About 84% of the caffeine you drink turns into paraxanthine inside your body.4 Since it comes from caffeine, there's less research on paraxanthine by itself than there is on caffeine or TeaCrine.

Q: Is paraxanthine basically the same thing as TeaCrine?

A: No. TeaCrine, also called theacrine, is its own compound with its own independent studies, including the two we just covered. Paraxanthine is part of the same pathway caffeine already uses. TeaCrine isn't.

THREE COMPOUNDS, THREE EVIDENCE BASES.

Caffeine:

Extensive, decades of research, known tolerance and jitteriness profile.

Paraxanthine:

Emerging, smaller and more recent, mechanistically tied to caffeine's pathway.

TeaCrine:

Multiple human clinical trials, including non-habituation data over 8 weeks, distinct non-stimulant mechanism.

What This Means for a Combined Formula

Flow Pouches use TeaCrine along with 100% organic fruiting body Lion's Mane, Cordyceps, and Reishi, plus methylcobalamin vitamin B12. Each ingredient has been studied on its own, TeaCrine is what we covered here. But the full combined formula, all these ingredients together in one pouch, hasn't been tested as its own single product in a published study. That's an important difference, and we want to be upfront about it.

So what does the TeaCrine research actually support? Three specific things: more energy and focus without feeling jittery after a single dose,1 no signs of tolerance building up over eight weeks of daily use,2 and real evidence that it works well alongside caffeine instead of against it.3 That's more specific, and more useful, than a vague "clean energy" claim.

The Energy Ingredient with Its Own Clinical Trial History.

Not just harsh stimulants and flavoring in a pouch.

In a 2026 survey of Flow customers, 76% said they quit nicotine completely or cut their use by at least half, and 87% said they had better energy throughout the day.5 These numbers come from a customer survey, not a clinical trial, so keep that in mind alongside the ingredient research above.
