I Tracked What Happened When I Quit Nicotine Pouches. Here's Every Day, Written Down.

Eleven years, most of a can a day. I didn't want a lecture, a patch or another cold-turkey Monday. I wanted to keep the habit I liked and lose the nicotine. So I tried it, and I kept a notebook.

Day 0, 6:40 a.m. Driveway. Second pouch of the day and I hadn't left the house yet.

The short version, if you're busy

  • I didn't quit cold turkey. I swapped my nicotine pouches for a nicotine-free pouch called Flow, one pouch at a time.
  • Days 2 and 3 were rough. I was short with everybody and nearly drove to the gas station.
  • Day 7 was my first full day with zero nicotine. On Day 30 I'm still at zero, and I still have a pouch in most afternoons. It just isn't nicotine.

Day 0: The Night I Counted the Cans

I started with dip at 22 on a job site. By 30 I'd switched to pouches because they felt cleaner. No spitting, no smell, and nobody at my kid's school had to know.

By 38 I was going through most of a can a day.

The first one went in before my coffee. One in the truck. One after every meeting. One while I read my son his bedtime story, which I'm not proud of. If I ran low at 10 p.m., I drove to the gas station, and my wife stopped asking where I was going.

One Sunday I cleaned out the truck and started pulling empty cans out of the console. I counted 19 before I quit counting. Then I did the math on the money and felt a little sick.

A pickup truck center console crammed with about twenty empty pouch cans, a receipt and a charging cable
The truck console that Sunday, halfway through clearing it out.

I'd tried quitting twice before. Both times I lasted about a day and a half. The nicotine was only part of it. The rest was my hands and my lip. Pouches were how I took a break, how I got through traffic and how I sat down to work. Take all of that away at once and I had no idea what to do with myself.

So this time I set a different goal: keep the ritual, lose the nicotine.

A buddy at work had been using a nicotine-free pouch called Flow for a couple of months. Instead of nicotine or caffeine it uses mushroom extracts (Lion's Mane, Cordyceps and Reishi) plus Theacrine. He wasn't preachy about it. He tossed me a can and said, "Swap one at a time."

My rules for week one

  1. No cold turkey. Swap one pouch at a time.
  2. Write down every pouch. Both kinds.
  3. Rate the day from 1 (easy) to 10 (awful).
  4. Tell my wife, so I can't hide it.

Day 1: The Can Showed Up. I Swapped My First Pouch at 7:12 a.m.

A Flow Wintergreen pouch can on a kitchen counter next to coffee, truck keys, a phone and an old pouch can
Day 1. Coffee, keys, the old can and the new one.

The first thing I noticed was that nothing about the routine had to change. Same kind of can, same size pouch, same spot under my lip. I got Wintergreen because that's what I always bought.

It has a cool tingle like a mint pouch, and the flavor lasted longer than I expected. What it doesn't have is the head rush. If you're expecting that, you won't get it. Flow says you'll feel it in about five minutes and that it lasts three to four hours. For me it felt less like a hit and more like being level.

The plan for Day 1 was simple. Every third time I reached for a pouch, it had to be a Flow. I didn't feel great, but I didn't feel terrible either.

I wasn't imagining the tingle:

"Love the flavor and the little tingle it gives you like tobacco pouches."

Day 2: Short Fuse

I snapped at the dog for being a dog. I snapped at a guy at work for asking a normal question.

What helped was having something to do with my hands. Every time the urge hit, I did the whole routine: open the can, pinch a pouch, put it in. The only thing that changed was which can I grabbed.

Turns out other people swap the same way:

"I am slowly going from Nic to Flow switching between the 2. Once I get comfortable with that, I will go to 2 flows and then 1 nic. The goal is to completely get off of Nic. So far so good."

Day 3: The Afternoon I Almost Drove to the Gas Station

This was the worst one.

John sitting in his truck in a parking lot, eyes closed, rubbing his forehead
Day 3, 2:40 p.m. I got as far as the parking lot.

Around 2:30 I had a meeting I didn't want to be in, my head felt like wet cardboard and everything irritated me. I grabbed my keys, drove to the gas station down the road and sat in the lot with the engine off.

I didn't go in. I put in a Flow, closed my eyes, counted to 200 and drove back to work. It wasn't magic. It was ten minutes of not doing the thing, and the routine was enough to get me past it.

Flow uses Cordyceps and Theacrine for energy without caffeine, and I leaned on that around 3 p.m. more than any other time of day. I won't pretend I know the science. I know I made it to five o'clock without buying a can.

Someone in Flow's reviews put it better than I can:

"...I knew I needed to stop. While these definitely don't pack a punch like nicotine, they really do satisfy the ritual and oral fixation that pouches give you. The flavors are pleasant, and they even have a slight cooling effect."

Day 5: I Left the Old Can at Home and Didn't Turn Around

Day 4 was still bad. Day 5 was the first day the fog started to lift a little.

I got to the job site and realized my old can was sitting on the kitchen counter. A week earlier I would have turned the truck around. This time I had a Flow in my pocket, and that was enough. I had one nicotine pouch when I got home that night, and I wrote it down.

Day 7: One Full Day. Zero Nicotine.

I didn't plan it. I sat down for dinner, looked at my notebook and saw that the nicotine column said zero.

I wrote the zero down and underlined it three times.

Day 7. Played catch until we couldn't see the ball.

The afternoons had started to feel steadier too. Flow's site says the ingredients build up and that most people feel the full effect after about a week of daily use, which lines up with when I noticed it.

That night my son and I played catch in the backyard until it got dark. Later my wife said I hadn't patted my pocket once. I hadn't noticed. She had.

Week 2: Not Perfect. Still Counting.

I'm not going to pretend it was a straight line.

On Day 10 I was at a buddy's barbecue. Somebody offered me a pouch and I took it. I wrote it down, same as everything else, and went back to Flow the next morning. One slip didn't turn into a week, and that was new for me.

By Day 14 the urge mostly showed up at the same few times: after dinner, stuck in traffic, sitting down at a desk. Those are the times I reach for a Flow now.

Day 30: Same Console. Four Weeks Later.

I cleaned out the truck again. Here's what was in the console this time.

Day 0: truck console full of empty pouch cans
Day 0
Day 30: the same truck console, clean, with one Flow can, sunglasses and a charging cable
Day 30

Here's what changed for me, and I'll try not to oversell it:

  • I don't plan my day around whether I have a can on me.
  • The first thing in my mouth in the morning is coffee.
  • I haven't made a late-night gas station run in a month.
  • I still have a pouch most afternoons. It just isn't nicotine.

And here's what didn't change:

  • I'm still a pouch guy. I like having one in.
  • Day 3 was still hard. Nothing in a can makes that part go away.

Flow didn't turn me into a different person. It gave me something to reach for that wasn't nicotine, so I could keep the habit and drop the part I hated.

Day 30. Saturday game. Stayed for all of it, no gas station run.

Questions My Buddies Asked Me

Does Flow have any nicotine or caffeine in it?

No. Zero of both. The focus and energy come from Lion's Mane, Cordyceps, Reishi and Theacrine.

Will it feel like my nicotine pouches?

The routine feels the same: same kind of can, same pouch, same spot, and the mint flavors have a tingle. You won't get a nicotine head rush. For me that was the point.

How many do you use a day?

The label says 4 to 6 a day. I landed around 5. There are 20 pouches in a can, so one can lasts me about four days.

How fast does it kick in?

Flow says about 5 minutes, and it lasts 3 to 4 hours. They also say most people feel the full effect after about a week of daily use.

Is there sugar in it?

No. It's sweetened with allulose. No sugar, no sucralose and no aspartame.

Should I stop my old pouches all at once?

I didn't, and Flow suggests the same thing: replace one of your usual pouches at a time. Everybody's different, so do what works for you.

Is Flow a medicine or a nicotine replacement?

No. It's a dietary supplement pouch with no nicotine in it, not a nicotine replacement product. I used it to keep the pouch routine I already had without the nicotine. If you're dealing with a health condition, talk to your doctor.

Can I cancel if I don't like it?

Flow's bundles are a subscription that refills every 4 weeks, and you can adjust, pause or cancel anytime from your account.
